With a focus on honest song-writing and an overwhelming desire to present their own interpretation and understanding of the world, West Australian four-piece The Silents have captured themselves in a state of flux and channelled it into their debut album 'Things To Learn'.

Dizzying harmonies bleed into tripped-out garage rock, dark corners are explored and uncovered, and the past, present and future collide head-on. Produced by Dave Parkin at Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth and mixed by Doug Boehm at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, 'Things To Learn' is the sound of time spent in music, poetry, ideas and revelations juxtaposed with the bleak reality of day-to-day living.

"This is our beginning," says songwriter Lloyd Stowe. "Acknowledging the loss of our younger selves and the fading of anything innocent and child-like, this album captures time for us in song."

The tracks on 'Things To Learn' were written over an extended period, and Lloyd says while writing them, the band had a view of the world that was somewhat spiritually wayward and mentally adrift – notions that creep their way into the album. But given the distinct nature of this time, he says, "It will be difficult from this point onwards to visit that place again."

Drummer Alex Board says the album is indicative of the band's philosophy towards songwriting. “We have always distanced ourselves from trends, focusing on writing songs for ourselves and playing with feeling. This is represented in 'Things to Learn'.”

The Silents' debut album follows on from two critically acclaimed EPs, 2006's 'Flicker And Flames' and 2007's '23', which yielded the triple j high rotation singles 'Nightcrawl' and '23'. They've shared the stage with the likes of The Vines, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Mess Hall, Maximo Park and You Am I among others, and will tour throughout 2008.

As Lloyd says, 'Things To Learn' is the beginning for The Silents.

New website launched

Welcome to the new online home of The Silents. We (ie someone else) have been working on this for awhile so it's nice to finally have it up, new artwork and all!

So, a few things. Our new album "Things to Learn" comes out this  Saturday 29th March, and we are launching it at the Rosemount Hotel with our good friends Abbe May, Capital City and Tame Impala. Come down, get drunk, buy the album, have fun! We are planning on a few surprises.

Secondly we have some new tour dates up in the gigs section, yes we are touring to promote our album, get free beer and see folk we haven't seen for awhile. See our suggestions for the CD launch and please feel free to do the same.

That's all for now but more soon.
